This summer camp intensive is for aspiring songwriters and producers and a good precursor to the TRHS music production course. The five-day camp guides students on the essentials of writing, recording and producing original music through the use of GarageBand, a DAW (digital audio workstation) that comes with every apple device. By learning how to record live instruments into GarageBand, as well as utilize its built in drum machines and MIDI instruments, students will not only conclude the course with an original song to share, but will be able to make beats, use MIDI instruments, record, mix and arrange using GarageBand for future compositions. This class may require the use of a personal iPhone, iPad, chromebook or Mac laptop computer.
Day 1: Intro to songwriting essentials and the basics of GarageBand and drum programming. Students will pick a key/meter for their song project and begin writing drum beats and bass lines.
Day 2: Intro to song form, MIDI instruments, synthesizers and arpeggiators. Students will determine the basic form of their song project and build on their drum beat and bass line.
Day 3: Discuss how to write a strong melody and counter melody and learn the essentials about song orchestration. Students will begin writing a melody, counter melody and add chording instrumentation.
Day 4: Intro to recording live instruments into GarageBand. Students will experiment with adding live instruments to their projects.
Day 5: Intro to editing and mixing with GarageBand. Students will begin finalizing their song project and editing/mixing it. Day will conclude with project sharing and feedback.
