Skills Taught: Entering water by stepping or jumping in from the side, rotary breathing, submerging entire head, blowing bubbles, open eyes underwater, front and back glide, treading water, swim 15 feet on front and back, swimming on side, use of a life jacket. Course format: Classes run 30 minutes with 6 students per instructor

    197 Virtual: District 197 Summer Driver's Education

    Our Driver’s Education program is offered in partnership with A+ Driving School. The course is approved by the State of Minnesota and meets all requirements for training anyone under the age of 18. The course fee includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind the wheel instruction. For the virtual classroom series, you must attend by logging in to the live broadcast at class time each day on a device that has the ability to be seen as well as heard for the entire class time. Please provide participant's email address during the registration process to send the meeting invite. This email needs to be accessible from the device being used. Participants missing class must wait for the next session to make up missed time--you must make up the same day that missed, for example of you missed day 3 of class you must make up day 3 of the next session.     Join us as we review basic French greetings and learn simple conversations. We will write a letter to our French pen pals, who live near the southern city of Toulon, France. We will continue our exploration of France, as we watch part of a french film, listen to la musique pop de la France, and learn how to make French beignets/doughnuts.   • Archery with Dodge Nature Center (Grades: 5-8)

    Archery with Dodge Nature Center **Only students participating in the ROCC Youth Leadership program after-school this school year can sign up for the ROCC section and rate. First time archers? Learn all the basics about bows and arrow in a safe and friendly environment. Experienced instructors will teach you everything you need to know to safely use bows and arrows. This class is a great entry into the sport of archery. Kids will be able to take the activity bus from Friendly Hills or Heritage to Dodge Nature Center You can also drop your student off at Dodge if you prefer at the Marie Entrance. **Kids will have to be picked up at Dodge Nature Center Marie Entrance, by 5pm by a parent or guardian--the activity bus is not provided to get home. If a student is picked up later than 5pm a charge will be applied by Dodge Nature Center for a late pick-up. Grades 5-8 welcome.     Join us for the Two Rivers Warriors Girls Basketball Camp, where young athletes from 3rd to 9th grade can hone their skills and passion for the game! Participants will embark on an exciting journey of skill development, covering essential aspects such as shooting, ball handling, passing, and defense, alongside other fundamental techniques. Through engaging games, focused skill sessions, and thrilling contests, kids will not only enhance their existing abilities but also cultivate new ones. Don't miss this opportunity to elevate your basketball prowess and have a blast doing it! *Please pack a nut-free lunch and drink. Athletes will need to bring to camp each day: Comfortable clothing and basketball shoes for indoors Water bottle and towel Their own basketball (we will have basketballs for anyone who does not have their own basketball)
  • Intro to Songwriting and Music Production Camp (Grades: 5-9)

    This summer camp intensive is for aspiring songwriters and producers and a good precursor to the TRHS music production course. The five-day camp guides students on the essentials of writing, recording and producing original music through the use of GarageBand, a DAW (digital audio workstation) that comes with every apple device. By learning how to record live instruments into GarageBand, as well as utilize its built in drum machines and MIDI instruments, students will not only conclude the course with an original song to share, but will be able to make beats, use MIDI instruments, record, mix and arrange using GarageBand for future compositions. This class may require the use of a personal iPhone, iPad, chromebook or Mac laptop computer. Day 1: Intro to songwriting essentials and the basics of GarageBand and drum programming. Students will pick a key/meter for their song project and begin writing drum beats and bass lines. Day 2: Intro to song form, MIDI instruments, synthesizers and arpeggiators. Students will determine the basic form of their song project and build on their drum beat and bass line. Day 3: Discuss how to write a strong melody and counter melody and learn the essentials about song orchestration. Students will begin writing a melody, counter melody and add chording instrumentation. Day 4: Intro to recording live instruments into GarageBand. Students will experiment with adding live instruments to their projects. Day 5: Intro to editing and mixing with GarageBand. Students will begin finalizing their song project and editing/mixing it. Day will conclude with project sharing and feedback.

    This class is offered on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Please register for one night only. Space is limited to 15 kids per class, register soon! This class helps pre-school age children burn some energy, work on general motor skills such as balance, jumping, movement, and coordination.     This class is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays. Please register for one night only. Space is limited to 15 kids per class, register soon! This class is designed for all beginner gymnasts. No gymnastics experience required! Athletes will practice on each event, gaining strength and confidence in their bodies and movements. Skills practice include chin holds, beam walks, jumping skills, levers, and more basic gymnastics starter skills. This class is designed for those who may have some gymnastics background and are ready to work on beginning skills such as forward and backward rolls, bridges, beginning stages of cartwheels and handstands, pullovers, and much more.     This class is offered on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Please register for one or both nights. Space is limited to 15 kids per class, register soon! This class is for young gymnasts who have experience and are working towards larger skills. Gymnasts in this class will learn skills such as back handsprings, front handsprings, beam cartwheels, practice going over the vault, pull over and back hip circles on bars, and other skills based on their personal gymnastics level.     Join us for a Summer Jazz class--open to incoming 6-12th graders Fall of 2024! Students in Summer Jazz will play jazz classics as well as contemporary jazz tunes. It is open to any Fall 2024 incoming 6th-12th grade student who plays saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drum set, electric guitar, or vibraphone. There will be 1-2 off-site performance opportunities that will be optional. The summer session will conclude with a concert open to the public.     School District 197 Youth Enrichment Community Education is pleased to partner with Advantage Educational Programs. For the past 26 years, Advantage Educational Programs benefited thousands of students in Minnesota by preparing them for the college entrance exams. They offer ACT Preparatory Courses in more than forty high schools in Minneapolis/St. Paul and the surrounding area. Online ACT Preparatory Course This course is an excellent alternative for any student unable to attend in-school classes or for a student preferring to prepare for the ACT exam on their own, and study at their desired pace. The fee for this course is $80, and you may repeat the course at no charge until you graduate from high school. The online course will allow students to log-in for the course and proceed at their own pace. The course will be using Google Classroom to present the online course and it will be equivalent to the 12 hour classroom time. The course will use instructors' videos, voice-overs, illustrations, and slides that guide you through all of the testing areas of the ACT. You will also be able to communicate with the instructor when you have questions or concerns. **If you are on free/reduced lunch please contact us for a scholarship. **You will need a gmail account to access the google classroom. Your student's isd197.org account that is managed by google will not work--ISD197 blocks access to google classrooms outside the 197 domain. Once students are enrolled, they are sent an access code for their class via email, as well as directions on how to begin the simple process of starting their class.     Design fabulous fashions and things for your room using paint, tissue paper, canvas, clay, yarn and more. We’ll make a fancy headband, clay pendants, a colorful decoupage bracelet, a funny hat and paint a colorful canvas for your room. We’ll even learn to weave. Invite your family to a fashion show on the last day to show off your creations. Bring a beverage and nut-free snack every day.

    Gizmos & Gadgets are weird, wacky, and super fun – and they are even more fun when you build them yourself! Join us in this super-exciting, super-secret Lab to design, experiment, and build your ultimate collection of extremely cool Gizmos & Gadgets! Create your own rubber band shooter, robotic arm, slingshot rocket, personal fan, and levitating pencil, among many other mind-blowing STEAM projects! Please bring a peanut-free snack and beverage.   • June Camp: Hogwarts Film School & STEAM Camp with Tech Academy (Grades: 1-4)

    Create your own stop-motion animation using characters from the Harry Potter and Fantastical Beasts series. Students will build and design magical-themed scenes and props. Then, they will handle all the technical details of filming scenes, including stop-motion, digital editing, special effects, and transitions to the movie. Students will create digital animations and participate in our Harry Potter-themed STEAM activities. Bring a USB drive on the last day.

    Do you have what it takes to survive in the wild? With friends, create cool gadgets to survive in the wild! Engineer a cool periscope, harness the power of the sun to cook (marshmallows! - yummy), a device for drinkable water, a shelter and so much more! Please bring a peanut-free snack and beverage.   • July Camp: Engineering: Rube Goldberg Machines with Tech Academy (Grades: 1-4)

    Chain reactions! Design and build amazing moving machines and teach our Lego bricks new tricks! With an active imagination as your guide, there are endless possibilities. Students working in pairs will learn about physics and engineering concepts such as Velocity, Projectiles, Trajectories, Force, Motion, and more. Every day students will learn new ways to combine Legos to cause different chain reactions and, on the last day, design their own Rube Goldberg Machine.
