SSP Historic Fort Snelling & Sibley HouseTripsArrive at Historic Fort Snelling, Minnesota’s First National Historic Landmark. It is located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers and is a place of major social, cultural, and historical significance to all people who have inhabited the region. This is a self-guided visit of the new Visitors Center and the historic fort. At the fort a map handout helps visitors schedule their time. You can explore buildings inside the fort from the Soldiers’ Barracks to the one-room schoolhouse, the Blacksmith Shop and more. There are costumed demonstrations to watch, a variety of stories to hear, historic games and interpretative spaces within the fort. Be prepared for a considerable amount of walking from building to building on paths that are covered by a thin layer of gravel. (Wheelchairs do not fit through narrow doors.) There are places to be seated. Between the fort and the Visitor’s Center golf carts are available to transport visitors. Explore the new Plank Museum & Visitor Center inside a rehabilitated 1904 cavalry barracks with exhibit spaces, galleries, a Museum Store, and grab-and-go food. [Because of the limited amount of space, half of the group will visit the museum, and the other half will shop in Northfield. The Oil & Vinegar Store is next door. Then switch places.] The Museum is home to Northfield's famous bank raid site. It appears as it did Sept. 9, 1876, when the James-Younger Gang attempted to rob it. In the Ted Scott Room, there are rotating exhibits on the history of the city, its region, and the state. The museum store offers souvenirs and books of local and regional interest offered in the atmosphere of an old-fashioned dry goods store. Have lunch at The Ole Store Restaurant featuring a contemporary menu in a charming neighborhood location. Menu: Swedish Meatball Luncheon with cookie and beverage. A local guide will board the coach for a city tour of Northfield. They will talk about the history of this village. Many of the buildings in Northfield look as they did a century ago, with windows and cornices embellished with 19th-century architectural detail.
