Take a guided tour of The Turnblad Mansion, decorated for the holiday season. Step back in time and experience the exquisite 33-room mansion, including detailed wood carvings, sculpted ceilings, and hand-crafted Swedish tile stoves. Learn about the fascinating Turnblad family, the art and architecture of the mansion, and the history of early Minneapolis. In 1908, the Turnblads, a Swedish immigrant family, completed the construction of their castle-like mansion. Twenty-one years later, they gave it all away to the community, founding the museum and cultural center that would become the American Swedish Institute. Today, the American Swedish Institute is a place to learn about and experience Swedish, Swedish-American, and Nordic culture, learn about the role of Swedish and other immigrants in Minnesota’s history. Hear the history of the Le Duc Family and some tales about manifestations of spiritual visitors. This splendid mansion was built by William Gates LeDuc during the Civil War. The 15-room house stands as a rare monument of unaltered Gothic Revival architecture. It features a picturesque tower, a limestone exterior and 20-inch-thick walls, a prominent front porch, chimneys for 10 fireplaces and a third-floor chapel with a white pine interior. Distinguished visitors included President Rutherford B. Hayes and Minnesota’s first governor, Henry Hastings Sibley. Tour both the first and second floor - there is not an elevator. Those who want to go outside can visit the Carriage Barn and Simmons Shed with exhibits on display. Luncheon Menu: Chicken Salad on a Croissant, a Fruit Salad, Vegetable, Dessert, Water, Tea, or Coffee. Tour St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. In the mid-1800’s all the social climbers, including the LeDuc family, recognized the importance of being a well-respected member of the local church. It is the fifth oldest church in the diocese and was organized as a mission in 1850 and was the only church in town that permitted Native and African Americans to their worship services. Church pews, built of butternut wood, were installed in 1867, and are still used today. Two small matching pews are found in the chapel of the LeDuc Mansion. Two of General William LeDuc's daughters taught Sunday school at St. Luke's Episcopal, and the family is referenced many times in the church's historical records. Alexis Bailly Vineyard: It is Minnesota's Original Winery. In 1973, the family planted the first vineyard in Minnesota with a pioneering spirit that has brought them unlikely fame in the wine drinking world. Their tasting room opened in 1978 with the celebratory release of the first wines ever produced commercially of 100% Minnesota grown grapes. Today, the second generation continues the proud heritage of making wines in the world's most difficult climate – "Where the grapes can suffer." Matinee performance: Irving Berlin’s White Christmas - The Musical. Veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have a successful song-and-dance act after World War II. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander. With a dazzling score featuring well-known standards including “Blue Skies,” “I Love A Piano,” “How Deep Is the Ocean” and the perennial title song, White Christmas is an uplifting, wholesome musical that will delight audiences of all ages.
